On 14 August a community event was held on the Lakes Estate in Milton Keynes to engage with private homeowners in the CESP area and introduce them to the energy efficiency upgrades they could have on their homes.

In recent months, Milton Keynes Council has carried out a large amount of work to improve the thermal comfort, safety, security and appearance of their properties in the Lakes Estate. This work is ongoing and the first phase is scheduled to be completed in November 2012.

On 26 July, Greg Barker MP visited Milton Keynes to discuss opportunities for local authorities in England to improve the energy efficiency of residential housing. Greg Barker also visited the Lakes Estate to see the works, and he was impressed with what he saw (see video here).

The works that have taken place to date have been focused on council-owned properties.

However, Milton Keynes Council will also assist owner occupiers and private sector landlords in the Lakes Estate to carry out works on their properties through a low interest rate loan.

Eligible works include for example warm roofs, double glazing, cavity wall and loft insulation and external wall cladding.

USEA works with Milton Keynes Council to inform home owners about this opportunity. Taking up the offer means that owners will increase the value of the property and make their homes cleaner, greener, warmer, dryer and cheaper to heat.

Activities at the event included a bouncy castle, face painting and a stand where residents could have a say in how the local community could improve. Three members of staff from USEA were also there to speak to local residents about what they could do to reduce their fuel bills.

At the USEA stand, a competition was held and prizes included an Eco kettle and an electricity monitor. Residents were given information booklets, power downs and the opportunity to discuss matters related to energy efficiency. There was also a Snakes & Ladders game with energy advice tips for the children, which proved very popular.

If you own a property in the Lakes Estate and would like to know more about the project and opportunities for you, please contact Susanna Olai at USEA
